Where We’re Going
Growth Foundation is starting with native plants, but the goal has always been bigger than a nursery.
We’re building the foundation for a regional organization that can grow native plants, restore habitat, create opportunities for people to get involved, and help communities build more sustainable relationships with the land.
1. Build the Native Plant Center
Our first major step is developing our Southwest Virginia greenhouse operation into a regional native plant center.
We’ll grow native plants for homeowners, landowners, restoration projects, schools, conservation organizations, and other growers. As production grows, we’ll expand both retail and wholesale sales and reinvest that revenue into our conservation work.
The greenhouse is the foundation for everything that comes next.
2. Restore More Habitat
Our primary goal is to use those plants to restore habitat. That starts with private land and expands into community and conservation projects.
That means native planting, invasive-species removal, seed collection, litter removal, pollinator habitat, and larger restoration projects as our capacity grows.
We want to make it easier for people to turn the land they already own into habitat.
3. Grow Education & Workforce Opportunities
As the greenhouse and restoration work expand, we’ll build partnerships with schools and community colleges to give students hands-on experience in native plant propagation, greenhouse management, agriculture, conservation, and environmental education.
We’re already working toward this model with Virginia Highlands Community College, where the long-term vision includes habitat restoration, student participation, and potentially a hoop house for hands-on learning.
4. Connect Conservation With Agriculture
Native plants are only the beginning.
Over time, we’ll expand into sustainable agriculture and local food systems by working with farmers, schools, colleges, markets, and community organizations.
We want to explore ways to improve soil, reduce waste, conserve resources, support local food production, and make agriculture more sustainable.
5. Become a Regional Organization
As our production, restoration projects, partnerships, and volunteer network grow, we want to expand our reach throughout the Appalachian region.
That includes developing community chapters, larger conservation partnerships, school programs, regional seed collection, and eventually distributing more native plants throughout Appalachia.
The Long-Term Goal
The native plant center is the starting point.
Our goal is to build a self-sustaining regional conservation organization where native plant production helps fund restoration, education, community projects, and sustainable agriculture.
We want someone to be able to discover Grow Foundation through our educational work, buy native plants, volunteer at a restoration project, help collect seed, work with us through a school or community program, or eventually participate through a local Growth Foundation chapter.
One greenhouse can grow thousands of plants.
Thousands of plants can restore acres of habitat.
And restored habitat can become the foundation for something much bigger.
